CCHS Announces 2023 Season Of Hope Adoption Drive

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY ANNOUNCES SEASON OF HOPE

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (November 20, 2023) The Chautauqua County Humane Society kicks off the Season of Hope, presented by Happy Hounds Hotel and Day Spa on Black Friday, November 24^th.  Brian Papalia of the Chautauqua County Humane Society said, “This is the 6^th year for the Season of Hope, and we have a very special opportunity, thanks to the Bissell Pet Foundation and a pair of generous donors, we are able to waive adoptions fees on animals through the duration of the campaign which lasts until Saturday, December 23^rd. “

Papalia pointed out that though the fees are waived, the adoption process remains the same, “For folks not familiar with our process there is an adoption form available at  CCHS, 2825 Strunk Road in Jamestown or online at Chqhumane.org. That leads to a conversation about a specific animal you may be looking at or to finding the animal that will best fit your lifestyle, and then you meet that animal.  Adoptions are generally completed the same day. For dog adopters that already have a dog, there will be an additional dog meeting. Our goal is for everyone involved to have a safe, healthy, and happy experience.” All animals adopted from CCHS have been spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, and have had their first dose of flea treatment.

CCHS will have a public kick off to the Season of Hope at its 2^nd Chances Thrift Store, 707 Fairmount Avenue during the Small Business Saturday Celebration from 10am to 6pm this Saturday.

The Season of Hope is also made possible with the support of Shults Auto Group, Supportive Divorce Solutions, and Kinetic by Windstream.  CCHS is open to the public for adoptions from 1pm to 5:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 11am to 3pm on Saturday.

CCHS To Hold PetSmart National Adoption Week Events This Week

Join the Chautauqua County Humane Society at PetSmart in Lakewood as we celebrate National Adoption Week this Thursday (November 9) and Friday (November 10) from 2 to 5pm and Saturday (November 11) from 11 to 3pm.  You will meet dogs and cats that are looking for their forever homes.  We thank Veteran’s for their service and remind them that with I.D. they receive special adoption benefits! Veteran and military adoption benefits include waived fees on dogs 6 months and older and cats 1 year and older. Puppies and kittens under 1 year will be 50% off. 

If you are in Erie, Pa this Saturday between 11 and 3pm stop by the Peach Street PetSmart as we will have adoptable animals at that location as well. 

2nd Chances Thrift Store Celebrates Small Business Saturday November 25th

The Chautauqua County Humane Society’s 2nd Chances Thrift Store is celebrating Small Business Saturday! Visit 2nd Chances, 707 Fairmount Avenue from 10am to 6pm on Saturday, November 25th and Save 50% on everything in the store, chances to win store gift certificates and CCHS merchandise, and meet and adopt some of the amazing animals from CCHS that you are supporting when you shop! Halloween Pet Safety Tips 2023

Costumes, trick-or-treaters, and jack-o-lanterns — all signs point to Halloween! But before the first trick-or-treaters come to your door and you dress your pet up, make sure that they are ready for the holiday.

Dressing up Your Pet for Halloween

Pet costumes make for some of the cutest photos, but you don’t want your dog or cat to be stressed while wearing their outfit. Take some time to get your pet used to their costume by gradually increasing the amount of time they spend in it (think of it like breaking in a new pair of shoes) before the big day. It’s also important to make sure that your pet’s costume isn’t putting them in danger.

• Ensure a Proper Fit
  Make sure their costume isn’t too tight (making it harder or more uncomfortable for them to breathe), or too loose (increasing their trip and injury risks). You also want to avoid dangling pieces of fabric or other objects your pet might chew on and ingest, possibly leading to a digestive irritation or obstruction.
• Avoid Masks
  Avoid putting on a mask or covering your pet’s face – loss of vision causes stress and inhibits their ability to get around safely. It can also obstruct normal breathing or potentially cause trauma to their eyes.
• Include Reflective Gear
  This is especially important if you’ll be taking your pet along for the trick-or-treating festivities outdoors. With so many people out driving unfamiliar roads, it’s important that your pet is visible to prevent accidents.

Be Wary of Strangers

If you want to take your dog along for trick or treating, make sure they’re properly socialized and would actually enjoy being a part of the fun. Many dogs get very nervous when approached by unfamiliar people or excited children and adding Halloween masks and costumes to the mix can set your dog up for a biting incident. Some dogs could become fearful and anxious and try to run away.

Staying Safe and Secure

Halloween can be stressful for many pets because of the non-stop door knocking and doorbell ringing, trick-or-treat yelling kids, strange costumes, and the constant opening and closing of the door.

• Create a Safe Space
  The noises associated with trick or treating (such as doorbells, knocking, and loud children) can be stressful for your pets. If your pet is anxious when someone knocks or rings the doorbell, set up a secure room away from all the noise where they can hang out. Put on calming music to block the sound of the doorbell and put out their food and water, favorite toys, or a yummy chew. And don’t forget a clean litter box for the cats!
• Medication
  Medication can help give your dog relief from their noise aversion symptoms. To see if your dog suffers from noise aversion, take this quiz.
• Prevent Door Dashing
  You don’t want your dog to get spooked and run out the front door while you’re handing out candy. Put up gates to prevent your pet from rushing up to trick-or-treaters or dashing out the door. Or put your pet on a leash and keep that leash in hand when you’re opening the door to hand out candy.

Keep Candy and Treats Out of Reach

Halloween treats are delicious for humans but can be dangerous for pets. It’s best to keep all treats out of reach of pets, especially chocolate and treats containing the sugar-free ingredient, xylitol. Keep the bowl of candy out of reach of your pet in between trick-or-treaters and hang your child’s bag of goodies up high when they get home.

Pet suffocation happens much too often, so make sure to keep any treat bags away from your pet and cut them along all the edges (so it lays flat) before throwing them away. Lots of animals want to investigate bags because they smell like food or candy, but that can be dangerous quickly!

Be Fire Safe

Did you know that about 1,000 fires are started each year unintentionally by pets[1]? Their fluffy tails or excited jumping can knock candles over and harm them or your home. Stay safe and use glow sticks or LED candles in your pumpkins and as decorations this year.

With some simple planning and easy management techniques, you and your pet can stay safe and have fun this Halloween!

CCHS Begins Thirteen Lucky Black Cats and Grey Ghosties Promotion Through Halloween

A mysterious supporter has stepped in again this year to help the black cats and the gray cats at the Chautauqua County Humane Society this Halloween season.  We are happy to announce the 13 LUCKY Black Cats and Gray Ghosties promotion. This mysterious supporter will be covering the adoption fees of at least 13 black cats and gray cats through the month of October.

It’s time to bust the black cat myth at Halloween: there is no reason for animal shelters and rescues to avoid adopting out black cats near Halloween, under the mistaken belief that people with evil intentions will use them for ritualized abuse or sacrifice. On the contrary, with October 27th being National Black Cat Day, now is a great time to adopt a black cat! Gray cats have been inlcuded this year because we have so many of these amazing felines relying on our care. 

Be sure to meet your next feline family member at our Subaru Loves Pets adoption event on Saturday, October 21st  at Shults Nissan Subaru on Fluvanna Avenue in Jamestown from 11-2p.

While the adoption fee is covered by our mysterious supporter, all standard adoption procedures will apply.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (October 9, 2023) – The Chautauqua County Humane Society (CCHS) teams up with Shults Subaru to help Chautauqua County shelter pets find homes. CCHS will hold a pet adoption event with Shults Subaru to help shelter animals in our community find loving homes. Shults Subaru will be donating $100 to the Chautauqua County Humane Society for every pet adopted in October. Our spotlight will be the return of the 13 Lucky Black Cats and Gray Cats promotion where a mysterious sponsor is covering the cost of those cats adopted throughout October. The Subaru Loves Pets adoption event is Saturday, October ^21st from 11pm to 2pm at Shults Subaru, 311 Fluvanna Avenue in Jamestown. Fall Empty The Shelters Kicks Off Fee Waived Adoptions Until October 14th

 
CCHS Teams Up with BISSELL Pet Foundation to “Empty the Shelters”

Pet adoption fees will be waived from 10/2-10/14  during the nation’s largest funded adoption event

Jamestown, NY. 10/2/23—With animal shelters across the nation facing an overcrowding crisis, thousands of highly adoptable pets are waiting for their second chances. The Chautauqua County Humane Society is proud to partner with BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness, for its Fall National “Empty the Shelters.” From Oct. 1 - 15, BISSELL Pet Foundation will sponsor reduced adoption fees of $50 or less at more than 345 shelters in 42 states.

BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” event is the largest funded adoption event in the country. With a goal of encouraging more families to choose adoption, this lifesaving effort has helped more than 190,000 pets find loving homes since 2016. As BISSELL Pet Foundation’s largest program, a total of 687 animal welfare organizations in 49 states and Canada have participated throughout the years. During BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” quarterly national events, an average of 1,225 shelter pets are adopted each day. 

"Our nation’s animal shelters are facing an overcrowding crisis unlike anything we have experienced in more than a decade. The devastating increase in owner surrenders and stray intakes has left tens of thousands of socialized, house-trained, and leash-trained pets desperate to find a home," said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. "Our Fall National ‘Empty the Shelters' will support the adoption of thousands of pets across the country, helping shelters in this critical time. Opening your home to a shelter pet saves a life and creates space to give another pet a chance."

This is the third time the Chautauqua County Humane Society has teamed with the Bissell Pet Foundation this year and during each of the Empty the Shelter Events we have seen adoption rates double.  Brian Papalia, CCHS Communication and Fundraising said, “We are so excited to be part of this wonderful national event and are looking forward to similar adoption results over these next two weeks.”

CCHS Walk 4 Paws A Success

The Chautauqua County Humane Society’s Walk 4 Paws presented by Happy Hounds Hotel and Day Spa, was a great success that was enjoyed by area residents and their K9 companions.  The walk was held this past Saturday, September 16^th at Panzarella Island Park in Jamestown and was attended by nearly 70 people.  Over $6,200 was raised to  benefit the animals that rely on the care of the CCHS.

It was as fun for the dogs as it was for the folks that brought them!” Papalia said the energy around the walk was exhilarating, “We really feel like this is the next generation of the Walk 4 Paws and look forward to growing the walk even more in 2024.”
