Beat The Winter Blues For You And Your K-9 Companion

As we make our way through another Western New York Winter we sometimes need to be reminded that the cold and snow can get to be as much of a drag for our four legged friends as it can for us. CCHS Director of Animal Services Sue Bobek offers some great ways to beat those late winter blues and create some fun and memorable times with our dogs.
Chautauqua County has no shortage of destinations to spend time with your dog(s). Bobek said “There’s the dog park in Lakewood, Long Point State Park, The trails at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and a number of other dog friendly trails in the area.” Bobek points out that before you plan out the best spots for selfies, you are going to want to make sure that you plan for the elements. Bobek said “For dog parents our top priority is to make sure everyone is safe and warm. If your dog has thin fur you will probably want to put a jacket on him, you also want to be sure that you are keeping the pads of their feet clear of ice balls and salt.” It’s also important to keep in mind that it is more taxing to walk through snow, so it’s just as important to keep your dog's physical condition in mind when playing outside as it is to keep track of the length of time you are out playing. Bobek said “Something you always want to keep in mind is time and temperature because the last thing anyone wants to end up with is frostbite. It’s also important to make sure you have water so your dog can stay hydrated.”
“If winter is not your gig there are plenty of places to get some activity in and have some fun indoors.” said Bobek. Dogs are welcomed at a number of area businesses including PetSmart, Home Depot, and Runnings. There is also the option of dropping your dog off for some fun times at Happy Hounds Hotel and Day Spa.
