On August 22nd, 2017 Americans were in awe of a rare peek at a solar eclipse.
While it didn’t make national news headlines, on that same day, a 40 pound, mixed breed dog named Buddy walked through the doors of the Chautauqua County Humane Society (CCHS). Buddy has been awaiting his adoptive family ever since, over four hundred and fifty days.
Why has this great little dog been at CCHS for so long? It might be his quirky personality. He is not fond of sharing, but Danny Reynolds and the Behavior staff at CCHS have worked on that. Reynolds says “He has been taught the trade command, which is to give up what he has for a treat in his person’s hand.” Buddy even knows to wait to go to his food bowl until he is told it is OK. He is a really playful boy who loves to play fetch. In Buddy’s world there is only room for one animal, and that’s Buddy. Stop into CCHS and meet Buddy!

Can the animal in your life dethrone Rascal Lee?
The competition has been steady in the past week as Rascal Lee, Snowflake, and Jackson PawLick have all volleyed for first place in the Hot Dogs, Cool Cats Photo Contest. Jaxson, Harry, and Sammy have also been showing strong as we enter the final stretch. This Friday at 10pm the contest wraps up, and we will learn who will be Pet of the Year for 2019. Keep in mind as you vote that the dollars you are donating stay local, and go to the direct care of the animals that rely on the Chautauqua County Human Society. We thank you for your interest, and the excitement you are helping to create about this competition. The Chautauqua County Humane Society (CCHS) 11th Annual Hot Dogs, Cool Cats Pet Photo Contest is going strong! You still have plenty of time to upload a photo and story of your favorite furry, feathered, or scaly friend for online visitors to vote on. The contest, presented by Happy Hounds Hotel & Day Spa, with media support by the Media One Radio Group ends February 1st at 10 p.m. There is no fee to enter. “The contest is a fun and easy way to support the animals at CCHS and is a great opportunity for folks to show off the animals they share their lives with,” said Brian Papalia, Community Relations Director for CCHS.
The 23 photos with the most votes will appear on at least 2 cards in a deck of playing cards, with the top 4 vote-getters appearing on all four face cards of their choice. So first place gets to pick from Kings, Queens, Jacks, or Aces, 2nd place gets second choice and so on. All 23 winners will receive (1) deck of playing cards. In addition, the winning pet will be named CCHS Pet of the Year and have their entry image on the card box. The winning pet’s owner also receives a $100 Visa gift card and a pet photography session with Cathy Panebianco of Panebianco Photography. There are also prizes including Visa gift cards for second through fourth place.

The CCHS adoption center has some great gift offerings when you visit, and some online options as well. Boy do we have some exciting news to share with you. In the spirit of this caring and sharing holiday season, Petsmart on Peach Street in Erie is spreading the Love to the Chautauqua County Humane Society!
They have invited CCHS to spend our Santa Pic Saturday's with us! Join Erie Petsmart and CCHS this Saturday December 15th from 12-4 pm for pictures with Santa! How can you help to support CCHS and the animals they care for. We can always use donations such as.... collars and leashes for dogs, food for cats and dogs, cat and dog toys, towels & blankets, cleaning supplies and even bird seed to fill the feeders outdoors that the cats love to watch! If you can donate an item they are in need of, bring it with you on picture day. At Petsmart we are so thankful to have such great organizations like CCHS... help us help them!

Dogs will be taking the stage at the Reg Lenna Center For The Arts as part of the Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet (CRYB) production of the Nutcracker. For the second year in a row the dancers have been kind of enough to think of the animals who don't have a home this holiday season, and allow them to have a moment in the spotlight. Chautauqua County Humane Society (CCHS) Community Relations Director Brian Papalia said "This is such a wonderful opportunity to help find homes for animals at our adoption center, we are excited that CRYB approached us to spotlight some dogs again this year."
This collaboration was made possible through the efforts of CCHS Volunteer Sarah Winton, and her furry friend Chloe (pictured above). Chloe is a former resident of CCHS, and this will be her second year to be on stage with the performers during the Nutcracker. Sarah is a certified dog trainer and offers dog daycare services through Country Canines. Learn more about Country Canines.
CCHS will bring one or more dogs to the stage at the Nutcracker performances on Thursday December 13th at 10am, Friday December 14th at 7:30pm, and Saturday December 15th at 2pm. Visit the Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet for more information on tickets and performances.
