#ClearTheShelters hosted by NBC/Universal and WGRZ TV out of Buffalo was a major success! At the Chautauqua County Humane Society (CCHS) adoption fees were waived and we were open extended hours for the event. This past Monday WGRZ TV reported the final adoption numbers for the 7 shelters in Western, New York that took part in the program and we were #1! That’s right thanks to the interest and support of the community and the adoption of 39 animals were adopted between 10am and 5pm.
Being #1 doesn’t matter as much as having all of the dogs and cats that were residing here at CCHS head off to new homes with loving families. Community Relations Director Brian Papalia says “It’s an emotional experience to walk through the dog kennels and cat colonies at the end of the day and have it be quiet, because almost all of the animals are off to their new forever homes”.
Overall a total of 135 animals were adopted this past Saturday in Western, New York.
Not even a week after #ClearTheShelters, the Kennels and Cat Colonies are filling up again. So there is always the need for people who are looking to adopt.

CCHS Community Relations Director Brian Papalia was a guest of the Ellington Farman Library's summer reading program on Tuesday, August 8th. The theme of the summer reading program is Building a Better World. We had a nice time talking about the importance of volunteering and animal safety. A lot of fun was had as the children were able to visit with four kittens that were brought along with the help of CCHS volunteers Alysa and Erica Papalia. The participants in the program made a very generous donation of food and newspaper for the animals living at the shelter.

When it comes to safety – educating children on the proper handling of a run in with a strange dog is very important! Sue Bobek, Director of Animal Services for the Chautauqua County Humane Society recently visited with the children attending the Summer Lit Camp program at Love Elementary School to teach them the S.A.F.E method. The method instructs children to Stand Still, Cross their arms, turn their faces away from the approaching dog and to keep eyes down. Bobek says the point is to make the dog lose interest in you and walk away. When employing the S.A.F.E. Method “you aren’t fun to the dog anymore” said Bobek. When the dog walks away, the children are instructed to slowly walk away in the opposite direction the dog is going. The Chautauqua County Humane Society was invited to the Lit Camp as a “Fun Friday” participant. The Camp is a program designed to help students maintain or increase reading skills over the summer in a fun and creative environment. The camp which is also held at Ring school also includes children from Fletcher and Bush Elementary schools. The program is a collaboration of the Jamestown Public Schools, Jamestown Community Learning Council, Striders, The YMCA and the YWCA.
