The Family and Consumer Sciences Club (FACS) at Jefferson Middle School recently made a donation of cat toys to the Chautauqua County Humane Society.  FACS teacher Sara Patterson says “Students in FACS club had been using their hand sewing and machine sewing skills to make personalize projects. We thought it was a great way to incorporate that learning into an activity to help the community.”  Patterson says the idea of learning by way of doing something to benefit the community is not new to the club.  In the past they have done projects including making homemade greeting cards for Meals on Wheels. For those who are not aware Patterson says the FACS club “allows students to practice skills in cooperative teamwork and leadership. Some of the activities we do involve cooking and sewing. We also like to incorporate the environment and always are big into celebrating earth day by planting seeds that the kids take home to watch the plants grow over the spring and summer months. The students also participate in helping the community by completing at least one service learning project.”  Chautauqua County Humane Society Executive Director Kellie Roberts says “It’s fantastic to see kids putting their talents to work and helping the community. We are grateful that they chose us for this project. I hope that their work inspires other kids in the community to use their talents to take on projects like this one”.  To learn more about Jefferson Middle School visit WWW.
